Synopsis:

In the eighteenth century, singing in church was frequently accompanied by a band made up of local working people, like the Quantock shoe-maker and violinist William Winter.

In the nineteenth century, the Leighland and Rodewater band in the Brendon Hills was led by a cello-playing blacksmith.

When folklorist Cecil Sharp visited Somerset in the early 1900's, he encountered many such local singers and fiddlers.

As recently as the 1970s, the tradition was being kept alive by the likes of railwayman, cave guide and musician - Jim Small, in his native Cheddar.

Here today, members of the Somerset Russets Village Band will cast a light on such individuals and their music.

Formed in 2012, The Somerset Russets Village Band draws members from across the county. Using a combination of readings (informative, humorous or poignant) and musical arrangements of traditional tunes played on strings, woodwinds and concertinas, we aim to reacquaint our audience with their local musical heritage.
